1. What three words describe you and why?

Empathic- I tend to be very tuned in to the emotions of others.

Detail-oriented- This can be a blessing and a curse!

Analytical- I like to consider all angles of what’s in front of me and make data-driven decisions.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

2021 Vice President, Programs. I’m responsible for monthly chapter program planning, two regional webinar series, digital learning resources and facilitating community building events.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I’ve been honored to serve on a Board of such brilliant thought leaders and loved learning from their diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and areas of expertise. I enjoyed the challenge of re-engineering our programming strategy and got to develop my leadership skills by building a team to bring new initiatives to life. With the pandemic requiring us to continue digital delivery, I got to play with so many different types of innovative tech solutions, collaboration platforms and unique approaches to keeping virtual participants engaged. This really helped hone my virtual facilitation skills too and I was able to bring that learning back to my organization.

What stands out for me most, however, is the shared experience of this historic period of uncertainty and change in the world. The opportunity to bring together our community of members, who represent so many industries at the heart of NYC, to exchange insights, share learning and support each other during this critical time was among the most meaningful and memorable experiences.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

This experience has given me the confidence to explore additional leadership opportunities.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Volunteering with ATD NYC is a great way to practice skills in a safe space, expand your professional network and discover new strengths. If you’re not sure if you can commit to a long term role, there are opportunities to jump in and help out with smaller scale projects to get a sense of what it’s all about.

Hardworking, diligent and free-spirited!

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

I started as an audit volunteer and now am serving as the VP of Finance (in 2021)

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I’ve enjoyed meeting and learning from my fellow board members. I love volunteering for a non-profit which is in my professional field, and I get to contribute to the community with my time and skills. I’ve been able to expand my network and find support through those whom I’ve met through the board discussions and various Chapter events.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I started my career as a CPA and like so many others then became an accidental trainer. Having been in the talent development space for over 3 years, I recently enrolled for the APTD certification, which has been immensely helpful in building my credibility and helped me in understanding the ‘why’ behind many learning solutions I have been exposed to.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Give it a go! You can commit to as much/as little time as works for you. The chapter has a very supportive leadership team and you will have the opportunity to develop new skills.

1. What three words describe you?

Curious: I like to ask “why”, “how”, “when” to get to know more about what’s going on. I have been told that I ask many questions. As a talent development professional, being curious has been a great way to build my skillset.

Empathetic: I relate to other peoples’ feelings. I try to “fit into their shoes” in order to understand their perspectives.

Optimistic: I believe that there is always something positive about the things that most of us do, so I look for the “silver lining” in every situation.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

I am currently the Vice President of Talent Management (2019 -2021) and previously Assistant VP of Technology (2018)

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I love the opportunity to volunteer with amazing and talented fellow talent development leaders. I am able to learn from them, contribute my ideas to help build the chapter as I practice leadership skills that I would not have otherwise been able to practice. I have become more confident trying out new ideas knowing that there’s always a 50% chance that they will succeed.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I recently got hired as the Learning & Development Manager at Winrock International, an organization in the International Development field. This is a new field for me with a lot to learn in an organization whose mission is near and dear to my heart. It is an exciting time in my career. I am also building my coaching practice where I work with leaders and managers to maximize their potential and effectiveness.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Do it. ATD NYC offers a great platform for practicing your leadership skills, connecting with fellow talent development professionals and learning about the latest industry trends. It nurtures growth in your leadership skills. It is an opportunity I would advise all talent development professionals (and aspiring ones) to take advantage of.

1. What three words describe you and why?

Curious: I am guaranteed to always have questions as I want to know the why and how about most things...I always want to see backstage and in the orchestra pit just as much as looking at what is happening on the stage.

Adventurous: probably ties into curious...I like to explore in many ways...traveling, learning new things, trying new approaches, going against the grain, not always following the established protocols, making new ones up

Silly: I try to find humor and lighten the mood when needed and possible. I find it puts people at ease and helps build stronger communications and connections.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

VP of Technology and previously AVP of SIGs

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

The people are super nice, motivated and realistic about the fact that our roles are volunteer roles. As such, they are always willing to step in and support if "real life" gets in the way. Also, there is lots of opportunity to try new things like build out the Learn Amp, our learning management and experience platform. This experience has also helped me feel more comfortable delegating by getting the support of AVPs and other fellow board members.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I want to continue to build on my leadership skills and, in particular, let go and trust more that others will have accountability (a challenge for a Type A person!) . Additionally, building out my skillset as a leader who understands that I don't have to know/do everything to be a good leader.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Do it. Having enough time might be a concern but ask questions and ALWAYS communicate. If you are time challenged don't just disappear let people know. You can start small by volunteering for a one off task or as an AVP....volunteering does not have to be all time consuming...it is a great way to build a supportive network of like-minded individuals and learn from one another.

1. What three words describe you and why?

Nurturing: I believe in the amazing potential each of us possesses. I’m always considering what more I can do to support people’s growth and development.

Loyal: I’m dedicated to the people and ideas in which I believe.

Sincere: Authenticity is key.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

I was the Chapter President in 2018 and Acting President in 2019 and 2020. I am currently the Immediate Past President and serve as an advisor to the 2021 Board. My role as a chapter leader also allowed me to pursue volunteer roles on a national level. Currently, I’m also serving a 2-year term on the ATD Chapter Recognition Committee (CRC) where we work with chapters to share their best practices and select the Chapter of the Month.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

You’ll find that each Board Member pursued their role because they believed they could make a positive impact on the Chapter. I’m no different. I saw opportunities (member experience and member engagement) to improve the Chapter and enjoyed being able to test ideas in a supportive environment. While not every idea was successful, I feel I was able to have an overall positive impact on the Chapter. My experience was a confidence-builder. I’m much more open to failing than before because I see how much you can learn from it.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I love the work I do (employee experience and employee engagement) and I’m becoming increasingly frustrated by the limited scope and timeframes that are inherent in consulting engagements. My goal is to move back into a corporate role where I can lead a company's employee experience initiatives.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

ATD NYC is an amazing organization that offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. And, if you don't see an opportunity posted, we are open to creating one. Volunteering is a great way to practice and hone your skills in a safe, welcoming environment that encourages experimentation.

1. What three words describe you and why?

Positive: I create positive outcomes by coaching others to develop their potential -- to excel at work and achieve personal fulfillment.

Curious: A desire to learn more about talent development is what first led me to ATD NYC chapter events and to Special Interest Groups on Coaching and Digital Learning.

Agile: Throughout my career, I’ve been able to significantly adapt and grow my skills. I’ve done finance, marketing, project management, talent development, diversity, equity, & inclusion, and coaching. This broad foundation informs the leadership development and coaching that I do now.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

I’ve played several roles on ATD’s Board, including President and VP of Programs for several years. Most recently, I served on the Board Nominating Committee and was involved in ATD’s Mentor Pilot Program.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

Being President enabled me to polish my leadership skills while giving back to the talent development community. I loved being able to meet and serve members while strengthening the Chapter. As VP Programs, I valued informing members on the latest L&D practices by bringing in dynamic thought leaders and arranging for networking opportunities.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

In October 2020 I started working as Managing Director, Leadership Development, at Coqual, a think tank leading DE&I initiatives. I am also building my executive coaching practice where I will work with leaders and managers to maximize their potential and effectiveness.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Go for it! You have everything to gain. It’s an investment in your career, your network, and your life. I’ve met some of my closest friends while I was volunteering for ATD!

I was a participant in the pilot mentorship program – as a mentor.

I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience. In addition I benefit from hearing about what others are doing, as well as from being challenged by questions.

I was on the Board Nomination Committee in 2020 – the Committee’s role was to interview potential board members. I am continuing in this role in 2021.

I have really enjoyed getting more involved in the processes of the NYC Chapter. I have been really impressed with the team that I have been lucky enough to interact with at ATD NYC chapter. How it has changed me is that I need to commit to increase my involvement in 2021.

I am looking into some facilitation and virtual training certifications to start with in 2021.

8 Actionable Ways Organizations Can Support Asian Employees in Anti-Racism Work

ATD NYC is committed to supporting talent development leaders and providing resources for your diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. You are all leaders who can make a difference for the people in your organization, and I encourage you to rise up to truly support your Asian employees to let them know their pain is not invisible.

“The violence will only end when the silence ends.” -Michelle Lee

In the last year, Stop AAPI Hate recorded 2800+ hate incidents against Asian Americans nationwide, including events of physical assault, barring Asians from establishments, and verbal harassment.₁ It is disheartening that hate crimes in NYC against Asians have increased by 1900% in the last year and it has been an unsettling start of the year.₂ President Biden recently signed an executive order condemning anti-Asian racism related to COVID-19. This post will share actionable ways for organizations to create a safe work environment to support your Asian employees.

1. Acknowledge the Anti-Asian Violence

There cannot be silence to the violence against the Asian community. If your leadership team has not done so, work with HR and ERGs to send a note to all of your employees to act in solidarity with the AAPI community and acknowledge what is happening to act against xenophobia and hate.₃ This kind of commitment will make employees feel safe to thrive and be seen. 3. Continue to Support Asian Employees on an Ongoing Basis

Do not check it off your list to think after you send out a statement and resources that you are done with your work as a leader. Make sure you continue to commit to the long-term anti-racism commitment to invest in the growth and support of your Asian employees. As Richard Leong, DEI Consultant reminds us to ask, “Do Asian employees feel seen and presented in the company’s leadership?” and “Are their stories told as part of the company narrative?”₃ Consider the professional growth of your Asians to leadership positions and make sure they are selected for professional development. For example, you could hire executive coaches for your AAPI employees, share the opportunity for Asian employees to apply for the BIPOC Scholarship to receive access to Strong Training and Coaching’s Manager Essentials Course or companies like PwC pay the membership for their AAPI employees to join Ascend, the largest, non-profit Pan-Asian organization for business professionals in North America. As Joyce Chiao, Founder of Inclusion Labs reminds leaders to consider promotion and compensation of API employees: “Are API employees paid equitable across racial demographics and role band? Are API employees promoted at the same rates within your organization?” Take the time to identify what works best to start with and know that this is a long-term commitment as a marathon, not a sprint for creating anti-racism solutions to support Asian employees.

4. Amplify Asian Voices to Be Shared

This is an opportunity for leaders to step up and check in with your Asian employees to create a safe space for them. Be empathetic to ask them if they feel comfortable sharing their experience and listen to what they’re sharing with you instead of wanting to respond with your own story. For those employees who are open to the idea of sharing their perspective more widely to the organizations, amplify their voices to be heard and seen. For example, Eric Toda, Facebook leader shared his personal experience with AdWeek about how hateful, painful memories return. Consider their overall employee experience to ensure they feel safe and belong by actively listening to their lived experiences.

5. Share Asian Leaders and Resources

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” It is critical to keep learning and sharing anti-racism resources with your employees. Here are some Asian leaders, organizations, and resources we recommend you to follow to get you started:

6. Create Mentorship Programs

There are various opportunities you can create as a talent development leader to continue to support employees and their growth. Mentorship is a valuable relationship to help your employees reach their full potential to support their personal and professional development while enhancing leadership and coaching skills. Consider creating a mentorship program and making sure your Asian employees can join to benefit from it as a mentor or mentee. For those who may not have the capacity to create an internal mentorship program, many organizations offer these resources to leaders across industries. For example, the 3AF Next Gen Leaders recently launched this year specifically designed to help rising leaders in the Asian American Pacific Islanders in the marketing, advertising, and creative industry or Women Who Create offers a mentorship program that connects young women of color in the creative industry.

7. Leverage Employee Resource Group

You do not want your Asian employees to feel a lack of belonging or access to opportunity in the workplace. This is why we encourage you to leverage or create an employee resource group for them to have a community. As shared by Aaron Fung shared in “Set Your Employee Resource Groups Up for Success”, you will need to identify your why, build your coalition, execute, review and refine. xenophobia and hate.₁ Some of the benefits of the ERG include the ability for employees to have a community among other employees to share experiences, identities, interests, along with increased employee retention and leadership opportunities.

8. Match Donations Supporting Asian Communities

For companies that offer matching to non-profit organizations, you can consider Asian nonprofits to donate to or encourage employees to support Asian communities by sharing the list of resources to increase awareness. Some organizations to support include AAPI Women Lead, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Stop AAPI Hate, Hate is a Virus, and Send Chinatown Love.

1. What three words describe you and why?

Enthusiastic, strategic, and collaborative.

I love taking on new challenges, especially when I get to learn something new. I am always the person that asks "Is this in alignment with our goals for this project?" and "How will this affect the XYZ team?" to make sure we understand the big picture and are using our time wisely.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

I am currently the Assistant Vice President of Special Interest Groups (SIGs). I was on the Board Nomination Committee in 2020.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

The Nomination Committee was a great introduction to ATD NYC. I learned a lot about areas of ATD I had yet to explore and it gave me a behind the scenes look at what our board members do. This process has made me even more enthusiastic about contributing to the wonderful things that ATD NYC does for its members.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I am fairly new in my Talent Development career and so I am reading books and taking classes on areas I wish to explore further. This includes things like data analytics, performance, and talent strategy.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Just ask. And keep asking. There are many opportunities. It is just a matter of putting yourself out there.

1. What three words describe you and why?

Optimistic, sociable and innovative. I live for the moment, enjoy working as part of a team and thrive in exciting and dynamic environments. I enjoy generating ideas for new projects but can be guilty of neglecting to think through the finer details.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

My role this year is President of the Chapter, following my stint as VP of Operations last year. I’m excited to work more closely with all of the Chapter VPs including finance, marketing, programs, SIGs, tech, talent management and membership. I hope to further my knowledge in the various areas that make ATDNYC a success and contribute to the ongoing development of the Chapter.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I moved to NYC in Dec ’17 and have enjoyed being part of the local Talent Development community. I love working on the board with a team from all different professional backgrounds. It’s great to have a network in NYC I can support and fall back on - it’s like an extended family!

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

Last November I took on a new role as Head of Global Learning and Development for Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty, where I have responsibility for designing learning and talent strategies, with a focus on strategic capability building to meet the future needs of the insurance industry. I lead a team of 11 learning and talent managers, serving 4,000+ employees, in 30+ countries around the globe

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

‘The best way to get involved is to jump in the deep end! You can contribute as much or as little as you like, depending on your time available. Volunteering is a great way to network, build your knowledge and contribute to your local TD community.

Remembering Linda Sayre, 1994 ATD NYC President

We are saddened to learn of the passing this year of Linda Sayre, 1994 President

Linda Sayre was an extraordinary woman whose significant talents were put to full use when she took over chapter leadership. She became president of the chapter at a critical juncture – corporations had stopped paying membership dues and ATD membership dropped considerably. Linda engineered the restructuring of the financial base and member services, downsizing the outside vendor who provided administration services. She also consolidated the leadership structure to eliminate an unworkable decision-making process and created in its place a way to honor senior level professionals on an advisory council. It was a masterful move.

Linda brought a fresh perspective and new ideas to the chapter. She created the role VP of Community Outreach and spearheaded partnerships with HSBC, LYNX (a black women’s bankers group), Time Warner Cable, and the New York City Department of Employment to develop programs to give minority young people exposure to corporate life. She presented this model at the national ATD conference. She continued to be involved in the chapter, most recently on the ATD NYC Nominating Committee.

Linda held senior human resource positions in the public and private sector and was an adjunct instructor; she loved teaching and motivating adult students to successfully apply learning to their careers, and in other areas in their lives. She was well traveled and spent her junior year of high school studying in Switzerland. Her doctorate in Adult and Continuing Education was from Rutgers, and her two master’s degrees were from Columbia University and the University of Sussex in the UK.

Linda Sayre was one of the most remarkable women I ever met. She had the ability to discern instinctually how to make leadership decisions that would benefit the health of the organization. She saw issues related to leading people clearly, no rose-colored glasses.

Her wit and candor were refreshing. She could have you in stitches one moment and wowed in the next with some story of human foible. She was well read and always prepared. She was also vulnerable, no armor on her soul. What you saw was what you got.

She endured much with grace and fortitude. What a treasure.

Linda had a great sense of history and culture and a love of New York City. She is remembered for her spirit of life, her wit, and her willingness and drive to do things differently that will have practical benefits. We will miss her.

ATD NYC 2020 Annual Report Available

Producing and distributing an annual report is included as part of the Chapter Affiliation Requirements (CARE) for ATD National. To be 100 percent CARE achieved, chapters must produce and share with members an annual report that includes, but is not limited to, information about membership numbers, financial performance, and progress toward annual goals.

By sharing our annual report, our members can better understand how the chapter uses membership dues to maintain chapter operations and support its local talent development professionals.

The 2020 ATD NYC Board of Directors presented its 2020 Annual Report on December 16, 2020 as part of our Annual Event/Holiday Party. This year's report was presented virtually due to the pandemic.

1. What three words describe you and why?

PROFESSONAL: I believe that we must adopt high professional standards for how we work with the people we are training and supporting--standards of performance that go beyond satisfying our bosses or the progress of our careers. Professional organizations, such as ATD, play a key role in maintaining those standards.

INNOVATIVE: Throughout my years in this field, I have continually explored how new, innovative technologies can fundamentally change our approach to employee performance- -not just how they can help manage or deliver the same old inefficient training models. My particular focus--Performance Support--is all about new approaches.

TENACIOUS: The concepts and technologies of Performance Support were first articulated, and their benefits clearly demonstrated by me and others, over 30 years ago. But, they have yet to take their place among the approaches generally applied in our L&D/TD world. Yet I keep on pushing.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

I am currently co-chair of the chapter's Performance Support SIG. We explore ways to enable effective employee performance that go far beyond what traditional training courses can deliver. I am also leading a small Community of Practice group to provide support tools and workflow learning to help SIG leaders register their events into the chapter's database application.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I enjoy working with professionals who want to improve the way they enable their organization's employees. And I continually learn from the experiences of other professionals. BTW: This is my second time through this, having run an ASTD SIG 30 years ago.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

As companies re-open from their shutdowns, they will need new ways to handle all the learning and relearning that the New Normal will demand. All employees will be, in one way or another, "novices." Training courses will not be able to meet that need. I'm exploring more effective and efficient alternatives.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

It is well worth the time you put into it. And the chapter needs your help if it is going to provide the services it is dedicated to providing.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

As an occupational safety professional, my past and other current volunteer involvement has been and is working with people with backgrounds and experience similar to mine and with ATD, this was definitely not the case. I have had the opportunity to volunteer, connect and learn from people with different backgrounds and this has been a very enriching experience.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I am in the final stages of the Level 3 gamification certification through Sententia that I have been working towards after attending a Level 1 class offered by ATD NYC. I also hope to learn Articulate or similar program this year.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Volunteer opportunities vary in duration from a couple of hours to 1 year commitments so try something out, you might be interested in and you may find out that you really enjoy it (or not).

1. What three words describe you and why?

Spontaneous, adventurous and eccentric.

I have been called spontaneous and adventurous quite a few times - since I get bored easily, I try to keep myself on my toes by changing things up and trying new ways of doing things. And constantly asking, being a constant "questioner" (using Happiness expert, Gretchen Rubin's, language) on why things need to be done a certain way, some may find my experimental ways to be strange or eccentric.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

VP of Programs. In a nutshell, I help with the programming that happens for the chapter. This is primarily the monthly chapter events that take place for our members. With COVID changing the world and moving us to virtual, we are looking at additional programming such as a podcast/video series with luminaries and experts from a variety of fields, because innovation happens at the intersection of disciplines!

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I love that I gain exposure to such a vast population of talent development professionals. As a volunteer, especially in my role, I have had the privilege to offer guidance, advice, and insights to over a dozen individuals new in this field and I have realized I should have started volunteering like this earlier in my career so I could have shared my perspectives with even more people. It's never too late, though! Also, the more I share what I know, the more I learn about what I don't know.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

This is the first year of my new company, Copilot Strategy, which is focused on helping L&D teams be more effective. With that said, this year I will be focusing on improving my sales, marketing, and advertising skills. A big part of consulting is to be able to acquire new business leads, so that will be a completely new territory for me in the coming year.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Do it. Quite simply, don't hesitate to give of yourself and your time (of course, after understanding the time committment, and making sure you aren't spreading yourself too thin!). I would advise any new volunteer to remember to utilize (a) the volunteer network of ATD-NYC to get things done, and (b) to leverage the other board members for help whenever needed.

1. What three words describe you and why?

•Empathetic: I always make a good effort to make sure I’m considering the other person and the other side of the story. This is one of the reasons I love human centered design so much as well.

•Ambitious and driven: If I set my mind on something, it would be extremely hard to get me off that road. I have a high inspiration for myself which comes with higher standards. Knowing this about myself helps me realize when to let things go and be more agile.

•Versatile: I am curious about a lot of things and have a wide range of interests, psychology, design innovation, learning, art, business, tennis, biking, and list continuous. I once was going to major in math and law.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

In December 2018 I went to Action Learning training with Mies de Koning, at the time, he was VP of Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Mies encouraged me to attend events at the chapter and meet more people there. So I started to attend events, then volunteered to organize them. In 2019, I met Gabrielle Bayme, the current VP of SIGs then I volunteered as the Assistant Vice President of SIGs. Together we organized the first Learning Lab in August 2019, and have been running them since then. Inspired by our popular Learning Labs, we created a separate SIG group, the Learning Innovation Special Interest Group to explore the latest and greatest in learning innovation. More to come!

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I love meeting new people and the events the ATD NYC chapter has to offer. There is always something to learn, whether at the event or being part of this team of volunteers. We always look for ways to be more effective. This experience certainly taught me more about myself and the work that I so much love.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

There is never a dull moment with running and planning Learning Labs. I am looking forward to organizing other events in the Learning Innovation SIG with Gabrielle and seeing what new learning innovations we can bring in the upcoming year.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

There are so many opportunities to be connected, find what clicks for you, attend a few events, connect with members 1-1 and see if you'd like to get more involved by volunteering. Opportunities are endless. The key is the right attitude!

People Data Nerd. I am passionate about people, quantifying and measuring things, and get super excited about all of it. I wear my nerd badge like a medal of honor.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

Co-Chair People Analytics SIG. This involves organizing SIG events; translating board questions into a branching survey form and analyzing results with some natural language processing techniques; and developing data architecture for surveys.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I love developing technical solutions and data that drive people strategy. Particularly with these projects, I think its interesting to see what trends and insights we find about our members or what people want to develop during mentorship.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I'm working on taxonomies (aka role classifications) and skill gap analytics for our workforce strategy; competitive business intelligence related to talent; and building automation into HR processes.

It's been an amazing opportunity to connect with nice, talented people. I'm including both ATD NYC members and all the talent development leaders with whom we partner to produce our webinars. Before this opportunity, I had limited experience with live online learning. Now it's in my comfort zone, which leaves me well prepared for the current circumstances.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

Having just started a new job with General Assembly, a company that helps people gain in-demand skills to advance their careers, I'm looking forward to building skills in those areas as well. At the moment, I'm doing our online data analytics learning path.

1. What three words describe you and why?

Three words that would describe me are (1) sarcastic- I am rarely serious and I try to have fun but that's mostly by being quite sarcastic. I guess it's because I grew up in NJ! (2) analytical- I tend to focus on what can be measured and what can be done both in professional and personal life. (3) supportive- I try to support my learners, my clients, and my ATD community.

I am the Co-Chair of the People Analytics SIG

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

The best part of volunteering with ATD NYC is the community. The people that are a part of ATD NYC represent a wonderful community of professionals. I have learned a lot from the community and I love sharing my knowledge with the ATD NYC community as well. The experience of volunteering with ATD NYC has helped me grow more aware of the ways the different parts of talent development impact the business and how we all have ways of contributing to an organization's success.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I have found the coaching SIG to be really beneficial for learning new and innovative coaching techniques. I will also continue learning more analytics tools. Depending on time I might try to learn how to code in Python in addition to R. As part of my work at Talent Metrics we're always focusing on creating better analytical approaches and are often faced with new problems that require new skills. When you work on specialized projects you're always learning new things!

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

If you can do it, it's worth your time. Find a way that you think you can contribute and do that. Your professional network can help you find vendors, find new positions, find new learning opportunities and ATD is a great network to be a part of. It's a big time commitment but with many things you get what you put into it.

1. What three words describe you and why?

Positive, light-hearted, calming presence

I’ve gotten this feedback from many people in my life as well as the coaching clients I serve. I am a “half-glass full” person, even now with the COVID-19 pandemic, looking for silver linings and expressing gratitude for everything I do have. I love making people laugh with my silly humor. The latest: When I pass a fellow mask-wearing doorman on my street, I say “You must be my relative”. They all laugh. And, by continually accessing my inner calm, I am a source of calm for others.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

I have been Co-Chair of the Career Development SIG for 3 years with Rob Hellman. Before that, I was Co-Chair of the Coaching SIG with Joyce Grillo for 2 years.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I “entered” the ATD NYC community by attending a Coaching SIG meeting, and then becoming a member. It’s the warm, welcoming and committed members and leaders that sustain my commitment, not to mention that the many ATD NYC programs and events (pre-Covid) make membership a huge bargain. And, I have developed sustainable friendships along the way.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

As a career and Encore career coach (mid-life reinvention and retirement), I have all the coaching clients I need and want. (I am grateful). I focus on continuing to develop my skills and knowledge in these areas.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

Volunteering for ATD NYC has so many benefits. It’s a way to: contribute to your professional community, meet and work with really great people, an opportunity to network, develop skills, knowledge and potentially leadership skills - and in this era of social isolation, an outstanding way to stay connected.

1. What three words describe you and why?

Compassionate, intelligent, genuine because I am always putting people first and genuinely believe that everyone is far more capable than they think.

2. What is/was your volunteer role?

Right now, I’m working on compiling our power members and interviewing them for use on social media and the chapter’s website. Also, looking to get more involved outside of that, a role that will enable me meet some more of the passionate people of the training and development field.

3. What do you/did you love about volunteering for ATD NYC? How has the experience changed you?

I love that we are all like-minded individuals. Everyone is so nice and willing to help each other. It’s allowed me to meet people that I normally wouldn’t have been able to through traditional networking. It’s a great opportunity to learn from others as well.

4. What career development opportunities are you exploring in the next one year?

I’m looking to explore the CPTD through ATD as well as learning more about AI and its impact on learning design.

5. What advice would you give to a Chapter member who is considering volunteering today?

It doesn’t take a ton of time to volunteer for the chapter and the time you do invest is worth it. You meet great people while learning a ton. That only helps to further your career and personal development.

Another Pivot for ATD NYC News

Welcome to the 30^th and final “ATD NYC: What You Need to Know Blog Post.” Over the last two years, we’ve worked to find the best way to communicate chapter news to our members. We started in 2018 with videos and then moved to infographics. In 2019, we tried adding the “ATD NYC Top 3” to the beginning of our weekly emails and finally, we began to use the Blog section of our website and provided a link to our posts in our weekly email.

In the end, nothing has been able to attract readership. So, this will be the last ATD NYC News Blog Post…for now. We’ll continue to discuss how we can best communicate with you, our members, as our new Board plans for 2020. Until then, we’ll return to the pre-2018 format of our weekly Wednesday eblast that will let you know about upcoming events.

Holiday Party – What Can You Share?

Our 2019 Holiday Party is on December 18^th at WeWork’s Bryant Park location (same as last year’s event). We are looking to energize the party to encourage a festive networking event full of fun. That’s where you come in! Do you have a skill (singing, dancing, playing an instrument, art, etc.) that you can use to encourage a small group of ATD members to participate with you?

Note: The CPLP exams will be changing in line with the ATD Competency Model revamp. Updated preparatory materials are expected to be available in early 2020. Voting for the 2020 Slate ended on Friday, October 4^th and was approved by our Chapter members.

Our Chapter was well-represented at the ATD Chapter Leaders Conference held Oct 10-12 in Crystal City, VA. This annual conference bring together Chapter leaders from the 100 chapter in the US. 2020 Board members that attended included: Gabrielle Bayme, Rosemary Okoiti, Greg Simpson, Glenn Brodsky, Lindsay Fletcher, and Riedolia Moore-Ellis.

In addition, Zachary Konopka and David Marx presented a session at the conference. In “How and Why Regular Webinar Programming Matters!” they shared our approach which won a 2019 ATD Share Our Success (SOS) Award.

Friday, October 4^th is the last day to vote on the 2020 Slate. If you still need to vote, look for an email titled, “ATD NYC Slate of Candidates for 2020 Board of Directors - Voting Open“ that was sent on September 25^th.

Candidates for the open roles will be appointed by the Acting President pending 2020 Board approval.

They would like a professional trainer to share tips and tricks on how to be a better instructor, tools to engage, key strategies, a simple “how to”. The class is planned for a half or full day session in NYC. If interested, reach out to gregory.simpson@atdnyc.org.

To hold the course, we need a minimum of 12 attendees by October 7th. We currently have 6 people registered. Sign up today to take advantage of this opportunity.

Comments: (38% commented)

Speaker & venue were great!
Make time for a little networking before the presentation - with drinks. And ensure it is clear who is there for the event/networking vs hanging around wework. Also pls make sure the space is mostly private. At the beginning of the event it seemed like there were a lot of loud/distracting conversations happening in the space among non-event-goers.
It was my first ATDNY event and it would have been helpful if the timing was more clearly detailed, i.e., the specific blocks of time for networking and for the program. The event itself was great - Maeve was terrific!
Host at a quieter setting (less background noise), introduce new members
I got more out of the networking aspect of the event than the presentation. The speaker was difficult to hear and didn't go as deep into the subject as I had hoped. It was the type of high level stuff on the subject that most of us have heard before. I'd like to see more interactive facilitated events on the chapter level rather than just speakers.

An Institute is looking for a dynamic instructor to lead an “Instruct the Instructor” class. They would like a professional trainer to share tips and tricks on how to be a better instructor, tools to engage, key strategies, a simple “how to.” The class is planned for a half or full-day session in NYC. An email was sent to every member as of August 15^th with the voting information. Email titled, “Vote on Proposed Changes to ATD NYC Bylaws (2019 version)." It includes the links and information about our proposed bylaws updates. Voting opened on August 15th and will close on August 23rd. Note that you may have to log in to your ATD NYC account in order to complete the voting process since voting is restricted to members only.

2020 Board Elections: Nominations Open

We are currently accepting nominations for the 2020 Board. You can learn more about the benefits of being a Board Member and read about each of our one-year Board roles here: 2020 Board of Directors Information. Email contact@atdnyc.org or talk with any Board member if you have questions.

Our goal is to have the new Board identified/ratified by the end of September so that they have the opportunity to attend the Chapter Leaders Conference in mid-October. The new Board would not take office until January 1, 2020.

ATD NYC, along with our sister chapters from Greater Philadelphia, Eastern Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey, Mid-New Jersey, and Long Island, is working to plan the premiere talent development conference of 2020. If you would like to be part of the conference planning/implementation team, here are the roles needed: Committee Chairpersons and Support Staff

ATD NYC Holiday Party Entertainment Committee Volunteers Needed

We are assembling a small committee of volunteers to help plan and coordinate the entertainment component of this year’s ATD NYC holiday party.

Is there a way to have the entertainment for this event come from the many ATD NYC members who are also actors, musicians, artists? What other types of artistic skills could we leverage from among our members? (visual art, dancing, comedy, acting, etc.)
What type of instruments, sound system, and/or equipment would we need and how could we get it at low cost?
What genre of music do we want? Live or recorded? DJ or curated playlist?

Last week, we announced our 1^st annual Greater New York ATD Regional Conference. ATD NYC, along with our sister chapters from Philadelphia, Long Island, Northern New Jersey, Mid-New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania, is working to plan the premiere talent development conference of 2020. If you would like to be part of the conference planning/implementation team, see the Volunteer Section below for opportunities.

ATD NYC Holiday Party Entertainment Committee Volunteers Needed

At this year’s ATD NYC holiday party we’d like to have music, dancing, and possibly other forms of entertainment in addition to the usual food, drinks, and networking.

We are assembling a small committee of volunteers to help plan and coordinate the entertainment component of this event.

Volunteers will help answer these questions:

Is there a way to have the entertainment for this event come from the many ATD NYC members who are also actors, musicians, artists? Could this be a nice way to showcase some of our members’ other talents? If we did this, how could we do it in a format that doesn’t distract from the networking component of the event?
Music:
- What type of music do we want? Live or recorded? DJ or curated playlist?
- Should we have background music throughout or only have music for part of the event?
- What type of instruments, sound system, and/or equipment would we need and how could we get it at low cost?
Other:
- What other types of artistic skills could we leverage from among our members? (visual art, dancing, comedy, acting, etc.)

Bylaws Update: Member Review Period

Background

Our bylaws were last updated in July 2015 in order to address the National Association’s name change from American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) to Association for Talent Development (ATD).

Reason for Updating

Originally, we planned to update the bylaws to remove references to the President-Elect and Past President roles as a way to shorten the Presidential tenure from 3 years to 1 year. After reviewing and discussing those proposed changes with National ATD, we decided to keep the President-Elect and Past President roles to remain consistent with the ATD bylaws template. Instead, our proposed 2019 bylaws incorporate the most up-to-date language from the ATD bylaws template, add further clarification to some processes, and remove/update some language to give the Chapter more flexibility in conducting its business.

2020 Board Elections: Nominations Open

We opened the nomination process for the 2020 Board on Monday, July 22nd (see email sent on Monday, July 22nd titled: “Apply Now for the 2020 ATD NYC Board of Directors - Deadline Friday, August 2nd”). 2020 ATD Regional Conference Announced

We are excited to announce our 1^st annual Greater New York ATD Regional Conference. ATD NYC, along with our sister chapters from Philadelphia, Long Island, Northern New Jersey, Mid-New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania, is working to plan the premiere talent development conference of 2020.

The American Management Association has graciously agreed to sponsor the event and host it in their Times Square location on April 3, 2020. Our goal is to have at least 250 attendees attend our conference (2 keynotes, 4 tracks/16 sessions).

Bylaws Update: Voting Opens 7/15

The 2019 Board has finished revising the bylaws and the review by ATD National is complete. We will be sending them for your review/vote beginning Monday, July 15^th.

Highlights:

We were planning to remove the President-Elect and Past President Roles. After working with National, we decided to keep the roles and in the case that the roles remain unfilled, the tasks from those roles have been incorporated into other Board roles. The VP Operations will take on managing the yearly internal audit responsibilities and the VP Talent Management will assume the lead in assembling the Nominating Committee for our yearly elections.

The changes proposed are minor and will provide the Board with more flexibility.

You can learn more about Board roles here: 2019 Board of Directors Information. The 2019 Board is currently revising the bylaws to make the President-Elect and Past President roles optional. This would mean that the President role commitment would be become one (1) year vs. the current three (3) year commitment. This change will require the approval (vote) of our membership.

TODAY (May 22) at 1:00pm: Webcast: How to Create Damn Good Job Aids and Other Mobile Support Tools. This is a joint webcast with the Performance Support and eLearning SIGs. Join them to learn a seven-step design-thinking process that will guide you through the process of designing and building world-class job aids as well as examine some tools you can use to facilitate their development. In addition, you'll receive two tools (via email prior to the session) you can take away and apply in your own organization.

Board Role Tenure Update

The 2019 Board is currently revising the bylaws to make the President-Elect and Past President roles optional. This would mean that the President role commitment would be become one (1) year vs. the current three (3) year commitment. This change will require the approval (vote) of our membership. It’s almost time for the ATD International Conference which is being held in the Washington DC area on May 19-22. We have until May 14th to form a Chapter Team. Once we have 5 attendees, we can qualify for lower rates: $1325 for ATD members and $1625 for those that are members of ATD NYC only. These rates are up to $550 less than the current registration fees. Already registered at a higher rate? You’ll qualify for a refund of any amount above the Chapter Team Rates. ATD NYC Chapter Incentive Program (ChIP) Update

The Chapter just received its April 2019 ATD Store report. As you know, our Chapter has a Chapter Incentive Program (Chip) code (CH1026) for any purchases you make through the TD.org website.

By using this code, our chapter receives a small percentage of each purchase at no additional cost to you and that percentage varies based on the type of purchase. National memberships, conferences, certifications, books, merchandise, etc. all qualify. In fact, all ATD NYC members can receive a $30 discount on National Membership by using our ChIP code.

Thanks to you, in April 2019, the Chapter earned $385.42.

If you've already registered, you’ll qualify for a refund of any amount above the Chapter Team Rates. Let us know.

NYC Gains Large Chapter Status

We learned that our Chapter will now be considered a Large Chapter and have access to more support through ATD. ATD revised its chapter size criteria. Large Chapter status now requires a chapter to consistently maintain a membership average of 300 members or more.

We were listed as a Medium-size Chapter under the previous criteria of consistently maintaining a membership average of 350 members or more. We teetered on the edge of Medium and Large Chapter status for months. We were seeing an improvement in our membership numbers, reaching 377 in March, prior to the implementation of the new criteria.

Margaret Clarkson (ATD NYC Past President) is speaking about Talent, Learning & Inclusion at Marsh, while learning from many others about their leadership development programs at the Conference Board Leadership Development Conference on April 9-10.

Sy Islam, People Science SIG Co-Lead received the Scientist-Practitioner Presidential Recognition Award from Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) President Talya Bauer.

Zachary Konopka, VP Programs, presented, “The Future of Professional Development is Adaptive Learning” at the 2019 ATD New England Area Conference.

Rosemary Okoiti, VP Talent Management, recently earned her Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) designation.

ATD Awards the New York City Chapter (ATD NYC) Chapter of the Month Honor

The New York City Chapter of the Association for Talent Development (ATD), formerly ASTD, was named an ATD Chapter of the Month (COM) for April 2019. The COM is national recognition for ATD local chapters that have demonstrated strength, growth, and innovation in managing their chapter.

Elizabeth Beckham, chair of ATD’s Chapter Recognition Committee, which awards the Chapter of the Month, said, ‘‘This distinguished award recognizes the New York City Chapter for demonstrating unique approaches that provide value to their members, other ATD chapters, and professionals within the talent development industry. The New York City Chapter is a leader in providing development opportunities to their members and other ATD chapter leaders by sharing best practices and encouraging leaders to learn and grow from each other. We are honored to recognize the chapter with ATD’s Chapter of the Month award.”

This award recognizes the New York City Chapter for its many accomplishments, including Chapter Affiliation Requirements (CARE) achievement, Sharing Our Success (SOS) submission acceptance, and overall chapter strength, growth, and innovation.

The Chapter was 100% CARE for 2018 and it had 9 SOS submissions approved!

9 ATD “Sharing Our Success” (SOS) Awards: The national SOS program identifies best practices among local ATD chapters and uses them as models for other chapters.
