    Every learning organization needs a defendable learning and performance strategy.  This strategy needs to unfold intentionally across the learning journey addressing a comprehensive learning and performance strategy.

    To realize peak performance, organizations must consider five fundamental moments of learning need.  These "Five Moments" comprise the full spectrum of learning and performance support requirements.

    An organization is competent to the degree that it is gaining and sustaining effective performance at every changing moment. These "Five Moments of Need" provide the overarching framework for performers to become and remain competent in their individual and collective work.

    In meeting the 5 moments of need, we find that organizations typically journey through three levels of maturity.The Performance Support Maturity Model incorporates the best practices of performance support into their offering, optimizing existing practices to enable peak performance, and delivering measurable business value. Any organization can enter anywhere along this spectrum depending on their needs and the maturity of their learning strategy.

    Bob Mosher

    Bob has been an active and influential leader in the learning and training industry for over 30 years and is renowned worldwide for his pioneering role in e-learning and new approaches to learning. Bob came to APPLY Synergies from Ontuitive, a world leader in Performance Support Software, where he was the Global Chief Learning Evangelist. Before joining Ontuitive he was with Microsoft, where he was Director of Learning Strategy and Evangelism, a global business at Microsoft Corporation featuring innovative learning products that help individuals and organizations learn more and go further using Microsoft technologies. Bob helped guide and communicate the direction of Microsoft Learning’s products both externally to their customers, and internally throughout Microsoft. Bob started his career in adult education with Element K. He was their Executive Director of Education for 16 years where he helped direct and influence their learning model and product.

    He has acted as an influential voice in the Learning and Development industry by speaking at conferences and by being an active participant and author within industry associations such as ISPI, ASTD, the Masie Consortium, the e-Learning Guild, and CLO Symposium/Magazine.

    Bob has worked with clients such as McDonald’s, Bank of America, Herman Miller, Hitachi, Disney University, Progressive Insurance, Huntington National Bank, Bank of America, Travelers Insurance, The Defense Acquisition University (DAU), Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Boeing, ADP, Amway, CDW, GE Medical, Humana, and ExxonMobil.

    Bob has received two lifetime achievement awards in the Training industry. In 1997, Bob received the ITTA’s Eddy Award for Excellence, awarded to individuals who exemplify excellence in the IT education industry. And most recently he received the Institute for IT Training’s 2006 Colin Conder award presented to a person who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the IT training industry. He is the co-author of two books: Training for Results and Innovative Performance Support: Tools and Strategies for Learning in the Workflow. Bob also spent five years as a teacher in New York’s public schools, and has a master’s degree in computer education from Nazareth University in Rochester, NY.

    Whether it’s an online meeting, a presentation via webinar, or live online training,

    engagement is the main question on everyone’s mind: Will it be worth my time to

    attend, or will it be an opportunity to check email instead? Online meeting technology

    is powerful and has made it easy to connect with people from anywhere in the world at

    any time, yet L&D professionals often still struggle with getting everyone to interact.

    Interaction is the answer to successful engagement and using the features of the

    platform is the answer to interaction. However, the features alone do not engage the

    participants. It is what you choose to do with those features that will make the

    difference in your next virtual training, webinar, or meeting.

    About the Presenter: Kassy LaBorie

    Kassy LaBorie is the principal consultant at Kassy LaBorie Consulting, LLC. She is a speaker, instructional designer, classroom facilitator, and author who specializes in virtual learning, teams, and live online technology. Kassy is passionate about helping organizations, learning teams, and training professionals successfully move to the virtual environment. In her previous role at Dale Carnegie Training, she was the director of virtual training services, a consultancy that partners with organizations to help them develop successful online training strategies. Kassy also served as the product design architect responsible for developing the company’s live online training product and experience. 

    Prior to this, she was an independent master virtual trainer, a Microsoft software trainer, and a senior trainer at WebEx, where she helped build and deliver training at the WebEx University.  Kassy is the co-author of Interact and Engage! 50+ Activities for Virtual Training, Meetings, and Webinars. A frequent speaker at industry conferences since 2006, she has presented at Training Magazine events including their yearly conference and Online Learning Conferences, Chief Learning Officer symposiums, The Virtual Learning Show, ATD’s TechKnowledge and International Conference & Exposition, as well as many local ATD Chapter events.

    As principal of the Monroe, New York-based Successful Business Writing, Jack brings more than 25 years’ experience as a corporate trainer, professor and public relations professional. He has been a frequent speaker and has published several articles on the importance of good writing. A 2012 story on workplace grammar in The Wall Street Journal cited him and included his contest. Then, a 2014 Journal column quoted him on effective email strategies.

    A professor since 2001, Jack teaches technical writing online for Southern New Hampshire University. He also earned the accreditation in public relations (APR) certification from the Public Relations Society of America and the Certified Business Communicator (CBC) designation from the Business Marketing Association. In 2015, Jack received the Charles T. Morgan Award for lifetime excellence in corporate training from the Association for Talent Development’s Northern New Jersey chapter.

    Jack earned his BA in Communication from Ohio State University and his MS in Journalism from Ohio University. He is also studying for his Ph.D. in Organizational Communication at the State University of New York at Albany.

    Applying a UX Methodology to the Assessment Experience

    Digitization is affecting user expectation both narrowly and broadly.  Creating a scalable, valid and multi-method digital assessment experience for emerging leaders presents both challenges and opportunities for the entire assessment approach.  In a recent project IBM applied design thinking and ongoing sponsor user feedback to evolve a richly engaging digital approach to identifying, developing and selecting emerging first line leaders.  Out of that iterative design process evolved a self-paced offering that delivers a highly interactive end-to-end assessment and development experience for the user, pipeline and selection insight for the business, and a corps of global debrief coaches to support. 

    This user-centric platform is already delivering high levels of satisfaction as measured by net promotor scores [NPS] of 54.  Better still, offering a digital assessment has reduced costs by 800 percent over the traditional assessment center approach, which makes it highly cost-efficient to deliver at scale.Additional advantages have been gained by allowing those with an interest in a leadership role to directly enroll in the program and self-nominate.   This has the potential to enrich our pipeline of candidates, support bias mitigation at the very start of the pipe and enhance our efforts to further our culture of inclusion.

    Alison Hartmann enjoys creating innovative, people centric approaches to business problems.  She is an experienced leadership development practitioner specialized in the use and deployment of psychometric assessments.  Currently she is on the assessment strategy team within IBM’s leadership, learning and inclusion group, where she has held a variety of roles since 2008.  A US citizen, she has lived over 20 years in Europe.  Her most treasured achievement from that experience: becoming fluent in and doing business in a foreign language.  She has held leadership positions across a variety of industries including banking, fine art, hospitality, consulting and IT.   She has lectured on Leadership Development at Universities in the Netherlands and Scotland. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a B.A. in History she completed a Master’s Degree in Management, Economics and Politics at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.  She enjoys alpine hiking, cooking and the arts.

    Anika Gakovic has over fifteen years of experience in leadership development, change management, team building, employee engagement, strategic planning and organizational design. Most recently Anika was with JPMorgan Chase as Head of Design for management programs and afterwards created Continuous Development programs at Leadership Edge.

    Her prior roles were Head of Organizational Effectiveness for OppenheimerFunds, Executive Development at New York Life Insurance Company, and Learning and Development roles at HSBC and UBS. Prior to her career in Financial Services, she worked as a consultant developing selection tests for Hess Oil and the Chicago Police Department while teaching psychology courses at University of Houston. Anika completed her PhD and MA in Industrial Organizational Psychology at University of Houston.

    Anika has been a presenter at conferences, including the Conference Board, Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and National Foreign Trade Council. She has also published articles for the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Organizational Development Journal. Anika's presentations and publications focus on a range of topics including executive development, employee engagement and motivation, and driving people strategy through learning and change management.

    Anika also served on the Board of Directors for New York HR Planning Society (NYHRPS) and participated as a coach for the Entrepreneurs Challenge Competition at New York University Stern School.

    Program Description:

    In today’s complex and rapidly changing environment, it is necessary to collaborate with others and work across departments, geographies and teams to get things done; oftentimes without the formal authority or title to do so. Influencing is a key skill required to operate under these conditions. In this Influencing for Results workshop we will focus on what it takes to influence other people to create win/win outcomes through partnering and planning.

    If we want to manage up, persuade a key stakeholder, or influence a decision for an internal consulting project, then we must be able to understand what influencing is and how to do it effectively. Influencing at its core is about moving people from resistance, to compliance, and ultimately when done well, to commitment; meaning they are all in with their heads, hands and hearts. Most people believe that individuals are born with a natural charisma and the ability to persuade others; however being able to influence others is a set of skills and attitudes that anyone can develop.

    The ideal approach is one of creating a shared vision and then motivating others to achieve it while creating win/win outcomes. It takes pushing through our comfort zone and planning so we do more than offer advice or take control and truly understand what it takes to get a successful outcome.
